Electronic Identity Card (CIE)

The Electronic Identity Card (CIE) is a personal identification document that is valid for identification and travel within the European Union, in certain States participating in the Schengen Agreement (e.g. Iceland, Norway and Switzerland), and in other States with which bilateral agreements have been reached (see the individual “Country Information” sheets on the website www.viaggiaresicuri.it).

Italian citizens residing within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General in Jeddah who are duly registered in the AIRE Registry may book an appointment to apply for the issuance of the CIE.

Please be advised that, following the entry into force of Law No. 19 of 19 January 2026, as of 1 June 2026, any citizen duly registered in the AIRE Registry may apply for the issuance of an Electronic Identity Card at any Italian municipality (Comune). The identity card will be delivered according to the same procedures applicable when the application is submitted through the Consular Office. The applicant may either collect the card in person from the municipality or request that it be sent abroad.
