The Civil Status Office of this Consulate General is responsible for:
- receiving civil status records issued by the Saudi authorities within the consular district and forwarding them to the relevant Italian municipalities for transcription;
- receiving judgments and other measures issued by the Saudi authorities within the consular district (e.g. divorce, adoption, etc.) and forwarding them to the competent Italian authorities;
- forwarding applications for changes of first name or surname to the competent Prefectures;
- preparing the marriage banns and publishing them online on the Consular notice board;
- solemnizing consular marriages and registering civil partnerships, provided that this is not prohibited by local laws. The celebration of a marriage may be refused when the parties do not reside within the consular district. A civil partnership is registered before the Head of the Consular Office having jurisdiction based on the residence of either of the two parties.
Italian citizens are required to report any changes in their civil status (by submitting the relevant certificates or other supporting documentation) occurring during their stay abroad to the Consular Office competent for the place where the event occurred.
Civil status records relating to events that occurred abroad may be submitted by the persons concerned, or by anyone with a legitimate interest, either directly to the relevant Italian municipality (see Article 12, paragraph 11, of Presidential Decree No. 396/2000) or to the competent Consular Office (either the Consular Office of the applicant’s place of residence or the Consular Office within whose district the records were issued).
Civil status records issued by countries that have acceded to the Vienna Convention of 8 September 1976, which provides for the issuance of multilingual forms, are exempt from legalization and translation. These countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Türkiye. Please note that the aforementioned Vienna Convention cannot currently be applied to Greece, which, although a signatory country, has not yet ratified the Convention.
