Holders of an Italian driving licence who reside within this consular district and are regularly registered with AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) may obtain confirmation of the validity of their Italian driving licence from this Consulate General if the licence expired no more than five years ago and does not fall under the cases provided for in Article 119, paragraphs 2-bis and 4, of the Italian Highway Code.
To renew the driving licence, applicants must first undergo a medical examination to assess their physical and psychological fitness to drive, carried out by qualified physicians as provided for under Article 119 of the Italian Highway Code. Applicants must undergo the required medical examination at a medical centre of their choice, provided that its standards and requirements are equivalent to those established by the Italian medical authorities.
Following the medical examination, applicants must make an appointment through the Prenot@Mi platform and appear in person at this Consulate General with the duly completed application form, a medical certificate, the expired driving licence (which must have expired no more than five years previously), and two recent passport-size photographs. They will then be issued the relevant renewal certificate.
Please note that the driving licence to be renewed:
- must be intact and submitted in its original form;
- must not have been revoked following conversion into a foreign driving licence or suspended for any reason;
- must either be approaching its expiry date (starting four months before the expiry date) or have expired no more than five years previously.
Applications for replacement of a driving licence that has been stolen or lost, as well as requests for certificates confirming the validity of driving licences, must be submitted in Italy to any office of the Motorizzazione Civile (Civil Motor Vehicle Department).

IMPORTANT
Italian diplomatic and consular offices abroad are not authorized to issue the sticker to be affixed to the back of the driving licence and do not have access to the database of the Motorizzazione Civile.
A renewal carried out by a diplomatic or consular mission is valid for driving both in Italy and abroad. It is therefore necessary to carry the renewal certificate at all times, as it forms an integral part of the driving licence for the purposes of its validity.
Once the holder re-establishes residence or domicile in Italy, the driving licence must be validated by the competent office of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Holders of an Italian driving licence who are not registered with AIRE and are resident in Italy, and who lose their driving licence while in Saudi Arabia on a temporary stay, must report the loss to the local police authorities and apply for a replacement licence upon their return to Italy.
