Public Digital Identity System (SPID)

What is SPID?

The Public Digital Identity System (SPID) is a simple, fast and secure way to access the digital services provided by local and central public administrations.

It consists of a single set of credentials (username and password) representing each citizen’s personal digital identity. Through SPID, citizens are recognized by the Public Administration and can access digital services in a personalized and secure manner.

SPID also allows access to public services in EU Member States through the European Union eIDAS system, as well as to services provided by private companies and businesses that have chosen SPID as an identification tool.

Thanks to the access system on which SPID is based, the Public Administration is even closer to citizens. By providing everyone with a consistent and intuitive way of accessing online services, SPID makes it easier to use digital services and simplifies citizens’ interaction with public offices.

The private sector can also benefit from digital identity by improving the user experience and the management of customers’ personal data.

What are you waiting for? With SPID, you register once and never have to worry about it again.

SPID for Italians residing abroad

Italian citizens residing abroad can also obtain credentials for the Public Digital Identity System.

SPID enables citizens and businesses to access online services provided by the Public Administration and participating private-sector organizations using a single digital identity.

An Italian citizen may need SPID to communicate with the Public Administration, access documents and administrative procedures, request certificates and official documents, check their social security contribution records, and carry out many other procedures online.

To obtain a digital identity, Italian citizens residing abroad who are 18 years of age or older must have the following:

  • a valid Italian identity document, choosing from an Identity Card, Passport or Driving Licence;
  • a valid Italian tax identification number, health card, or alternatively the certificate confirming its assignment;
  • an email address;
  • a mobile phone number, including a foreign mobile number.

Applicants who do not have a tax identification number can request one from the Italian Consulate with jurisdiction over their place of residence.

The issuance of SPID credentials is free of charge, with the exception of certain identification methods, which may involve a fee. Obtaining SPID credentials (username and password) requires the user to undergo an identification process carried out by an Identity Provider.

Identification can be completed online using the National Services Card (CNS), Electronic Identity Card (CIE), an audio-video session combined with a bank transfer, or a biometric passport, or alternatively via video call.

Applications for SPID credentials are submitted by registering on the website of an Identity Provider (IdP) accredited by AgID. Each IdP offers different methods for requesting and obtaining SPID, and users are free to choose the provider through which they wish to complete the procedure in the manner they find most convenient. They simply need to select an online identification method marked with the EU or World symbol, indicating that the method is also available outside Italy.
