Issuance of a Provisional Travel Document (EU E.T.D.)
If an Italian citizen finds themselves in an emergency situation and there is insufficient time to complete the necessary procedures for the issuance of a new passport, this Consulate General may issue a Provisional Travel Document, also known as an EU E.T.D. (European Union Emergency Travel Document). This document is valid for a maximum of 15 days and may be used exclusively for the journey back to Italy or to the country where the applicant has their permanent residence abroad (provided that the applicant is not a citizen of that country).
To obtain an EU E.T.D., please contact the Passport Office at anagrafe.gedda@esteri.it to arrange an appointment.
On the day of the appointment the following documents must be submitted:
- In the event of passport theft or loss: a report of the theft/loss filed with the local police;
- EU E.T.D. application form;
- Two recent passport-size photographs;
- Copy of the passport, if available;
- Copy of another identity document. If no identity document is available, the Office will carry out the necessary identity checks;
- Proof of travel (airline ticket), with arrival at the destination no later than seven days from the date of submission of the application at the Consulate.
An application for an EU E.T.D. for a minor must be signed by both parents.
IMPORTANT: Obligation to Return the Document
The holder of an EU E.T.D. is required to surrender the document to border police or another police authority upon arrival at the destination.
If the destination is a country other than Italy, the holder must return the document to the consular office with jurisdiction over the destination.
