Please note that only Italian citizens by birth (so-called iure sanguinis) may submit a declaration for the acquisition of citizenship by operation of law on behalf of their minor children as of May 24, 2025. The deadline for submitting these declarations is May 31, 2029.
Italian citizens who acquired Italian citizenship through naturalization (marriage), residence in Italy, or under Law 379/2000 (descendants of persons born and previously resident in territories that belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire) may not transmit Italian citizenship to their children under the new criteria.
To submit declarations of intent to acquire Italian citizenship on behalf of children who were minors as of May 23, 2025, parents may go to the Consulate during public opening hours (Sunday to Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.), bringing:
- Proof of residence within this consular district;
- The minor’s birth certificate, accompanied by its Italian translation;
- For Italian citizens residing in the district who had their Italian citizenship recognized/reacquired at this Consulate General: a substitute declaration of certification (dichiarazione sostitutiva di certificazione) made by one of the declaring parents, stating that they are an Italian citizen by birth and are duly registered with the consular district of this Consulate General. The declaration will be verified by the Office;
- For Italian citizens residing in the district who did NOT have their Italian citizenship recognized/acquired at this Consulate General: a substitute declaration of certification made by one of the declaring parents, stating which public office (an Italian Consulate abroad or a Municipality in Italy) granted/recognized their Italian citizenship, and stating that they are an Italian citizen by birth and are duly registered with the consular district of this Consulate General. The declaration will be verified by the Office;
- If one of the two parents is deceased: the deceased parent’s death certificate.
For better organization of the service, all interested parties are asked to send an email at least one day in advance to: anagrafe.gedda@esteri.it, stating their intention to use this service.
Both parents must appear in person and sign the declaration of intent to acquire Italian citizenship on behalf of their minor child/children before the duly authorized consular official.
If the child who was a minor as of May 24, 2025 has since reached the age of majority (i.e., turned 18 between May 25, 2025 and May 31, 2029), the child must submit the declaration personally.
Please note that if only one of the two parents is absent at the appointment, the procedure will be completed only when the second parent signs the declaration.
If the two parents submit their declarations at two different times, both must also provide the minor’s birth certificate and its Italian translation.
ADOPTED CHILDREN: Parents wishing to submit a declaration for the acquisition of Italian citizenship on behalf of minor adopted children must send an email to anagrafe.gedda@esteri.it with the following subject line: “Minor adopted children as of 24/05/2025. Request for an appointment to submit a declaration for the acquisition of Italian citizenship”, in order to receive precise information regarding the documentation to be submitted.
CASES WHERE FILIATION IS ESTABLISHED WITH RESPECT TO ONLY ONE PERSON: An Italian citizen by birth who is the father or mother of one or more minor children, where that parent is recognized as the sole parent with respect to whom the filiation of the minor child/children is established, must send an email to anagrafe.gedda@esteri.it with the following subject line: “Filiation established with respect to only one person for minor children as of 24/05/2025. Request for an appointment to submit a declaration for the acquisition of Italian citizenship”, in order to receive precise information regarding the documentation to be submitted and to subsequently receive an appointment to make the declaration.
