If the applicant has decided to establish their residence in Italy, the authorities of the Italian municipality are responsible for the recognition of Italian citizenship. Once registered in the Register of Residents, the foreign citizen may initiate the procedure for recognition of citizenship iure sanguinis (the duration of which is established by law and is 180 days in total), by submitting the documentation specified in Circular K.28.1/1991.
The applicant may not appoint a legal representative or have another person act on their behalf; the applicant must be physically present in Italy.
The request for issuance of the “No Renunciation/Non-Renunciation” Certificate is submitted directly by the Italian municipality to the Consular Office, exclusively via PEC (certified electronic mail). The Consular Office’s response is sent to the municipality, not to the applicant, and is always sent exclusively via PEC, provided that the request has been submitted correctly.
Applicants may not contact the Consular Office directly regarding applications handled by municipalities or other Consular Offices, as the Consular Office has no information concerning the progress of such applications beyond matters falling within its own jurisdiction.
