Reacquisition of Italian Citizenship

Law No. 74 of 23 May 2025 has reopened the period for the reacquisition of Italian citizenship for former Italian citizens who were born in Italy or who were resident in Italy for at least two consecutive years and who lost their Italian citizenship no later than 15 August 1992, pursuant to Article 8, paragraphs 1 and 2, or Article 12 of Law No. 555 of 1912 (naturalization in a foreign country, renunciation of citizenship following the involuntary acquisition of foreign citizenship, or minor children residing with a parent who lost citizenship).

The possibility of reacquisition does not apply to individuals who renounced Italian citizenship (or who lost it for another reason) on or after 16 August 1992.

Declarations of reacquisition may be submitted between 1 July 2025 and 31 December 2027.

The applicant for reacquisition must submit:

  1. A valid identity document issued by the authorities of the country of current citizenship;
  2. A birth certificate: if the applicant was born abroad, it must be submitted in the form required for registration/transcription in Italy, duly legalized and translated;
  3. For applicants born abroad, a historical certificate of residence issued by the competent Italian municipality;
  4. A historical certificate of citizenship;
  5. Documentation proving the reason for and date of loss of Italian citizenship. The applicant must provide evidence of the acquisition of foreign citizenship and, where applicable, the renunciation of Italian citizenship: a certificate of naturalization or, where required by local practice, a birth certificate accompanied by certification of citizenship and documentation indicating the basis on which such citizenship was acquired. Documents issued by foreign authorities must be duly legalized and translated.

A €250 fee is required for declarations of reacquisition of Italian citizenship and must be paid at the Consular Office.

The declaration must be made personally by the applicant.

Pursuant to Article 15 of Law No. 91/1992, the applicant does not reacquire citizenship retroactively from the date of birth, but from the day following the date on which the declaration is made.
